Former foster kids struggle with homelessness

According to a new article from the US NGO Children´s Rights as many as 31 precent of former foster youth end up as homeless our couch surfers when they are dropped from the foster-care at the age of 18.

I´m currently working on a article about the situation for former foster kids in Russia. It seems that the situation for the kids are roughly the same in Russia as in USA. But the big difference between the two countries is that the Russian authorities is trying to do something about the situation for former foster kids. Of course it still much to be done for former foster kids in Russia but where there's a will, there's often a way.

Valet mellan pest och kolera är enkelt

Du har säkert hört uttrycket; Det är som att välja mellan pest eller kolera. Den egentliga grundtanken med uttrycket är att visa på ett omöjligt val mellan två helt oacceptabla valmöjligheter. Men är egentligen valet mellan pest och kolera ett omöjligt val?

För att överleva pest måste du snabbt få läkarvård. För att överleva kolera räcker det oftast om du har tillgång till rent vatten. Även om det är bra att du kommer under läkarvård så snart som möjligt om du får kolera så kan du kurera dig själv genom att sköta din hygien och dricka regelbundet. Om inte pest behandlas snabbt är dödligheten nästan 100 procent. De flesta som dör av kolera dör av uttorkning. Utan behandling är dödligheten nästan 60 procent. Men som sagt den som har insjuknat i kolera kan kurera sig själv om han (jag vägrar skriva hen) har tillgång till rent vatten eller vattenreningsvätska, i sådana fall sjunker dödligheten till ett par procent. Med den här informationen i åtanke är valet mellan pest och kolera inte något svårt val och mitt svar på frågan blir självklart att jag väljer kolera framför pest alla dagar i veckan.

På engelska används uttrycket "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" för att uttrycka ungefär samma sak och valet mellan Rock=berg och ett Hard Place=hårt ställe är ett omöjligt val då de gör uttryck för samma sak. Presidentvalet mellan Mitt Romney och Barack Obama var i mångt och mycket ett val mellan ett berg och ett hårt ställe. Möjligtvis kan man säga att Obama är lite mer kolera än pesten Romney och därför är det nog bra att koleran segrade till sist.

Om du ställs inför omöjliga val i livet så finns det alltid en utväg. Det gäller bara att hitta den och oftast finns utvägen betydligt närmare än du tror.

Your Latvian neighbours need your help

What would you do if your neighbours could not afford to pay their rent, their food and their clothes. Would you just ignore them and pretend as if they were not there? Or would you help them so they came back on their feets again? Latvia is a neighbour to Sweden and they are short of everything. And yet few Swedes cares about their Latvian neighbours situation...

Latvia is the country in the European Union that has suffered hardest by the economic crisis and the country is now in a deep economic recession. The previously so optimistic Latvian tiger economy which was pumped up by the major Swedish banks aggressive lending lost its bite and the country has gone into a deep economic recession. Workplace after workplace has gone bankrupt. According to official statistics nearly 20 percent of the population is now unemployed but unofficial sources are talking about an unemployment rate of almost 40 percent and in some rural areas in the east of Latvia the unemployment is almost 100 percent according to local social workers.



You can make a change for the people in Latvia. If you donate money to Velki Association, Star of Hope, USA, Swedish NGO SAM-hjälp or the Swedish NGO Hjärta till Hjärta the money that you give will go to families in need in the Latvian society.
